Proteinase K is a broad-spectrum serine protease that is widely used in molecular biology to digest protein and remove contamination from preparations of nucleic acid. It is derived from the fungus Engyodontium album (formerly known as Tritirachium album). Proteinase K is highly reactive and can cleave peptide bonds adjacent to aliphatic, aromatic, or hydrophobic amino acids. It is particularly useful for removing proteins that may interfere with downstream molecular biology experiments or for isolating nucleic acids from complex samples.
